Monarch Sanctuary

December 30, 2014 Written by Curt Tipton

Went out this afternoon, to the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary. This year they estimate there are over 20,000 Monarch Butterflies in the Sanctuary; this is way up from the last few years. Even though the numbers are up, the government is considering putting the Monarch on the endangered species list. Pacific Grove has several community gardens to raise plants that produce nectar for the monarchs. When it is cold the Monarchs cluster together to keep warm. In the picture below there are thousands of butterflies, just a few have their wings open. (Can you spot the 3 that have a blue dot on their wing?) As an added bonus a young deer was resting in the garden and the moon was shining brightly although it was about 2:30 p.m.
